This annual report describes the work of Alehm during the period from January 2009 to December 2009. It shares with our members, professional colleagues and the public not only our organisational development and accomplishments, but also the financing and expenditure that supported our work. Alehm has had a busy year, especially in the second year of operation as a charitable company.

London food hygiene iPhone app launched

iPhone appiPhone appA new iPhone app and mobile enabled website which reveals the hygiene rating of restaurants and other food premises, was extended to include all food outlets in the capital on 21 July.

Score on the doors rating schemes are operated by a number of boroughs and used widely in London. The schemes allow consumers to see the results of latest food hygiene inspection in the form of a star rating (usually from zero to five stars with five stars being the highest score).

Health impacts of poor air quality in London

The Greater London Authority has released a study of the health impacts of poor air quality in London.

The research by the Institute of Occupational Medicine informed the Mayor's Air Quality Study. It used evidence-based risk factors associated with pollution to assess the contribution that prolonged exposure to poor air quality could make to the number of premature deaths in London.

Investigation of gastrointestinal infections

Alehm have published research aimed at improving joint work to tackle communicable disease in London. This seeks to:

  • explore barriers to good communication between London EHDs and HPUs;
  • identify issues surrounding the notification system; and
  • review existing gastrointestinal investigation procedures in London.

The results include recommendations for future action to develop a common approach for the investigation of gastrointestinal disease.
