Investigation of gastrointestinal infections

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

It is known that the work of local authorities varies in response to the investigation of infectious diseases. The causes of variation includes: population, local social factors, economic factors, available resources, and the relationship between environmental health departments (EHDs) and Health Protection Units (HPUs).

The Association of London Environmental Health Managers (Alehm), Health Protection Agency (HPA) and Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) created a joint London environmental health post in late 2008.

A study has been undertaken to:

  • explore barriers to good communication between London EHDs and HPUs;
  • identify issues surrounding the notification system; and
  • review existing gastrointestinal investigation procedures in London.

The results include recommendations for future action to develop a common approach for the investigation of gastrointestinal disease.

The report was presented by Camilla Bourne at the Alehm meeting held on the 22 January 2010. The report has been adopted by the London HPA and Alehm.

Camilla Bourne has now left the project and Siân Hale has been appointed to work with the boroughs and the HPU to take the recommendations of the report forward.
