London food hygiene iPhone app launched

iPhone appiPhone appA new iPhone app and mobile enabled website which reveals the hygiene rating of restaurants and other food premises, was extended to include all food outlets in the capital on 21 July.

Score on the doors rating schemes are operated by a number of boroughs and used widely in London. The schemes allow consumers to see the results of latest food hygiene inspection in the form of a star rating (usually from zero to five stars with five stars being the highest score).

Investigation of gastrointestinal infections

Alehm have published research aimed at improving joint work to tackle communicable disease in London. This seeks to:

  • explore barriers to good communication between London EHDs and HPUs;
  • identify issues surrounding the notification system; and
  • review existing gastrointestinal investigation procedures in London.

The results include recommendations for future action to develop a common approach for the investigation of gastrointestinal disease.

Siân Hale appointed joint London EHP 2010

Siân HaleSiân HaleFirst year student, Siân Hale, has been appointed joint London environmental health professional for 2010. Sian's 12-moth, part-time post is funded by the Health Protection Agency and the Association of London Environmental Heath Managers and supported by the CIEH.

London EHP receives honour from Queen

Alehm wins food safety grant for Olympic host boroughs

The host London boroughs for the 2012 Olympics have won funding from the Food Standards Agency’s Safer Food Better Business programme to improve food safety in the run up to the games. The joint bid from Newham, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Hackney, Greenwich, Kensington and Chelsea, Brent, Merton, City of London, Southwark, Havering, Bromley, Haringey, Enfield was coordinated by Alehm.

London health and safety partnership

Local authorities and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are responsible for enforcing health and safety legislation. London environmental health services successfully coordinate interventions both across London and together with the HSE.

Alehm is the main forum for planning and coordinating this work across London, with the HSE Partnership Manager attending Alehm meetings, and a London Environmental Health manager being seconded to work in the HSE's London partnership team.
